Hospitals, universities, transport hubs.

Buildings that must work for fifty years, twenty-four hours a day, with no acceptable failure mode.

What this discipline covers.

Hextal entered civic construction in 1962 with the rebuild of Rotterdam's Dijkzigt Hospital. Today the Civic and Health division delivers hospitals, university campuses, transport hubs, government buildings and public amenity structures across Europe.

Healthcare infrastructure is among the most complex building typologies in existence. A modern hospital must operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for fifty years or more, with mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that support intensive care, surgical theatres, diagnostic imaging, laboratory environments and patient accommodation. Failure is not a maintenance issue. It is a clinical risk.

Our teams bring structural and MEP engineering expertise together with specialist healthcare planning knowledge, ensuring that every building we deliver is not only structurally sound but operationally viable from the day of handover.

How we approach this discipline.

01

Healthcare-specific briefing

Clinical adjacency planning, infection control zoning and patient flow modelling are embedded in the design process from day one, not reviewed at the end.

02

MEP coordination

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in a modern hospital represent 60% of construction cost. Our federated BIM process resolves every clash before installation begins.

03

Phased handover

Hospitals cannot close during construction. We deliver in phases, maintaining full clinical operations throughout, with rigorous infection control barriers between live and construction zones.

04

Commissioning protocols

Every room is commissioned against a functional performance specification, not just a building regulation checklist. Air changes, pressure differentials and acoustic levels are tested and recorded.
